A crime and politics blogger living in Austin, Texas, claims he was cuffed and detained by police for simply walking home with his five-year-old granddaughter.

The reason this happened, he says, is because he is white and she is black.

Wow that was pretty scary for him I bet. You usually hear about something like this happening the other way round.

On one hand I can understand why the police stopped him but in not knowing the situation, I can't understand why they didn't give him a chance to explain, nor did they seem to listen to the little girl or call the number that the guy gave them to verify he was the child's grandfather.

I know that police have a very hard job to do. But sometimes they make it harder on themselves than necessary.

A whole lot more times than necessary.

From January 2010 through December 2010 the National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project recorded 4,861 unique reports of police misconduct that involved 6,613 sworn law enforcement officers and 6,826 alleged victims.

    • 4,861 – Unique reports of police misconduct tracked
    • 6,613 - Number of sworn law enforcement officers involved (354 were agency leaders such as chiefs or sheriffs)
    • 6,826 - Number of alleged victims involved
    • 247 – Number of fatalities associated with tracked reports
    • $346,512,800 – Estimated amount spent on misconduct-related civil judgments and settlements excluding sealed settlements, court costs, and attorney fees.

The stats or 2011 have not been published yet, also this in not a complete list, it is only what was tracked by Injustice Everywhere, a site you may want to visit.

Well...yes and no. I think the cops did the right thing in the interests of the child. You have to remember that the call they got was regarding a kidnapping. So they have to react to that. Unfortunately they really screwed the pooch, so to speak, in the way that they handled the situation. SO not cool.
